I have been playing with the trial LR more and can see that it does not muck with my file structure. That would in easier than finding the photo in explorer and then dragging to SEP. Maybe because I am on the trial, or maybe it will never allow it to be called from Picasa. Yes, the prev/next buttons in Silver Efex Pro makes it easier to navigate through multiple photos I might drag into it.įWIW, I was not able to right click in Picasa and open in SEP. Your sample images don't really show any interesting differences because by your own admission you're not using the individual tools to their fullest (which isn't saying it's not a nice image, BTW).
If you're going to work with raw, PhotoNinja, and Silver Efex Pro it's probably worth taking the time to learn a more powerful tool than Picasa to manage your images. PhotoNinja can work as a plugin to LR in the same way that Silver Efex Pro can. You can have your images on a separate drive than the catalog if you wish. LR can be configured to leave your images in their original locations and will not alter them in any manner nor move them. Silver Efex Pro doesn't give you a nice thumbnail view of all the images but it does give you Previous/Next buttons under the main image to work your way through the images you have loaded. If you want to skip that step you can simply drag more than one image at a time onto the Silver Efex Pro icon to load multiple images. It's obvious that Silver Efex Pro is meant to be used as a plug-in but if all you really care about is getting your images into the app then Picasa will do that. and select Silver Efex Pro from the list? If you're happy with Picasa you can simply select your image in Picasa and then right-click and select Open With. But given that i am looking to save time and money, the advantage of LR is not clear to me.(FWIW, the PE8 jpg is overdone for my tastes, but again, that could be because the 'chrome' preset is too harsh.) The default settings in LR and PN may be vastly different, which make such comparisons very hard. In fact after I got the jpg i have to boost fill light a bit in Picasa because the picture was so dark. But that easily could be because LR is begging for more than just the boosted clarity that i applied. I used the 'chrome' B&W settings from PE8 for this one (PNPE8_*).

Second is taking the same default raw output from Photo Ninja and running that jpg through the free Photo Effects 8 program that i downloaded recently. Then dragged that jpg to the app file of SEP and again used high structure harsh in SEP. Third photo is from opening raw in Photo Ninja and accepting the defaults and then saving a color jpg.
Used default settings and B&W preset: 'high structure harsh' on it, sent back to LR and boosted clarity a bit and developed as a jpg. I opened one in LR 5.3 and sent to the SEP plug-in.
The experiment seems quite hard to conduct fairly. Will report back, though it seems from these early posts there are not many here who use SEP as a standalone product. Presumably the LR should have more detail since, Arjay, what I think you're saying is that through LR, SEP will be working on a 16-bit tiff, while the PN output is first 'degraded' into a jpg, before SEP gets to do its magic. I will try running a RAF file through PN and LR later and then through the same SEP pre-set and post the resulting jpgs. It's just a long slog for a hobbyist and family guy. Years back I had the first Photoshop CS and I don't want to go back to Canon raw files > tiff file > jpeg. No doubt LR has a steeper learning curve, but that is also something I am looking to avoid. I just get everything into my computer according to the date it was shot, which Picasa is very quick at doing.) It seems more 'mature' than Photo Ninja, but in my quick trial, PN processes my X100s RAF files as nicely, or nicer, and certainly quicker than what i can do with LR. If i can get it to leave my file structure alone, which i think I can, I might consider it.(I have no interest in spending time with extensive tagging or GPSing.
